What You'll Need to Get Started

Raw footage is essential

To re-edit your wedding video, SmashJ needs the raw, unedited footage from your wedding day — the original files recorded by your videographer's cameras, not the finished film they delivered to you. Without the raw footage, there's nothing to re-edit from.

How to get your raw footage: Contact your videographer and request the original camera files from your wedding. You are the client and you paid for those files — most videographers will provide them on a hard drive or via cloud download on request. Some videographers include raw footage in their packages; others may charge a small fee. If you encounter any difficulty, let us know and we can advise.

Common questions

Questions Couples Ask Us

My videographer won't give me my raw footage. What do I do?
This is more common than it should be. Start by making a written request via email — having it in writing is important. Check your original contract to see whether raw footage was included in your package. If your videographer is unresponsive or refuses, you may have grounds for a dispute through your state or territory's consumer protection body (e.g. Consumer Affairs in Australia, or the FTC in the US). Get in touch and we can advise based on your situation.
I only have the finished film — no raw footage. Can you still help?
Unfortunately, no. Re-editing a wedding video requires the original camera files — the raw, unedited footage — not the finished film. A finished film has already been compressed, colour graded and exported, so there's no flexibility to recut or change it. Your first step is to contact your videographer and request the raw files.
How long will the re-edit take?
Our standard turnaround is 10–15 business days from when we receive your raw footage. For a full documentary edit or a very large footage volume, this may be slightly longer — we'll confirm your timeline when we quote. If you have a specific date in mind (an anniversary, a family event), let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate it.
Can I choose my own music?
Yes, absolutely. Music is one of the most personal parts of a wedding film. You can suggest specific songs, artists, or a mood and we'll source appropriately licensed tracks that match. If you have a song that's personally meaningful — your first dance song, for example — we can look into licensing options for it specifically.
Do you work with footage from all types of cameras?
Yes. We have no restrictions on footage format, resolution, or camera type. Sony, Canon, Blackmagic, DJI drone footage, GoPro — we handle all of it. Just send us what you have and we'll work with it.
Is my footage kept private?
Always. Your wedding footage is personal and intimate — we treat it that way. We never share, post or display any couple's footage publicly without explicit permission. All files are transferred securely and handled with complete confidentiality.
How much does a wedding video re-edit cost?
Pricing depends on what you need — a full re-edit from scratch, a specific type of film (highlights, ceremony, documentary), and the volume of footage all affect the cost. Do you work with couples outside Australia?
Yes. SmashJ serves couples worldwide — Australia, the US, Canada, the UK, New Zealand and beyond. Everything is done online. Your raw footage is uploaded to us securely, we edit remotely, and deliver your finished film via download. Where you are in the world doesn't matter.
